Why I Want to Run

Hey there! Yesterday at the Veggie Mobile, I was telling my co-workers that I can feel myself getting stronger from lifting all the heavy boxes, and that I was trying to build up strength by jogging too. The reaction I got from them was something simple, yet totally unexpected; they asked me why I want to run.

I couldn’t think of something to say on the spot other than it’s a good way to stay in shape, but when I took a minute to think about it, I realized I want to run because:

  • I like feeling stronger and more capable of challenges
  • It gives me confidence
  • I feel mentally and physically better when I finish
  • I am satisfied knowing I accomplished a goal

For the first time in my life, I actually want to become an athlete. I no longer feel that my body looks best simply when I’m thin or at a certain weight. I want to feel strong and be strong.

Although I didn’t end up running yesterday, I did go on a 12 mile bike ride! But before I get to that, let’s talk about food!
Yesterday’s breakfast was a usual bowl of oats, but this time I added chopped fresh mango.

Even though we have about 2lbs of fresh blueberries, I prefer frozen ones in my oatmeal because they melt and cool the oatmeal down, but give off lots of flavor in the process!

Our neighbors have a bunch of blueberry bushes that they allow the public to pick for $2.60 a pound. Completely organic too!

I was on my own for dinner last night, and we have some leftover tomato sauce that needed to be used, so I whipped up some whole wheat pasta and a salad. I actually decided to measure out a serving of pasta, since I’m not exactly sure what one looks like.

It actually turned out to be much more than I thought it was!

I dressed it up with sauce, green beans, and purple basil from the CSA!

Served with a delicious, CSA filled salad!

After dinner, I went on a bike ride with my friend Hilary and her dad. Last time I went bike riding was just a few weeks ago, and I only made it 40 minutes up and down my road a few times! I’ve definitely made progress since then.

We rode along a nearby lake called Duane Lake.

It was beautiful!

Towards the end of the bike ride was when the real action happened. One of our neighbors was walking her dog on the side of the road, but they were stopped for a reason. There was a skunk on the other side of the road! I didn’t get a picture because I was too afraid to move, but he raised his tail twice in preparation to spray!

Luckily we all made it past him, but as I was racing on the edge of the road my phone and camera bounced out of the carrying case on my bike and flew across the road. Nothing broke, but my phone’s corners have some unpleasent dents :(

After the bike ride, Hilary and I decided to treat ourselves to ice cream!

I got a brownie fudge in a sugar cone.

A nice little treat from the traumatizing skunk!

If someone asked you why you run (or another form of physical activity), what would you say?

  1. I run to feel strong and to push myself. :) And because I love it. I could go on and on, really. Isn’t it interesting to think about why you actually do something, because even though it’s simple it’s hard to explain? Great job on the bike ride!

  2. Running keeps me sane. I feel healthier (both physically and mentally) after I finish a run. If I take a few days off of running, I will start to crave a long run!

The skunk incident is really scary. I would have freaked out about being sprayed.

  3. Ha ha, i’m so glad ya’ll made it past the skunk.. but sorry your phone has some bruises on it :( … @least you got some ice cream afterwards though :)

I run because the way it makes me feel, both physicall and mentally. I love the “runners high” I get after finishing a long run. It truly is an amazing feeling!
